perspectives edition. windhover: literary and arts magazine
Windhover is North Carolina State University's Literary and Arts Magazine. The magazine has won countless awards for its design and content. As the Project Lead for the Perspectives Edition for this publication, I helped create a platform to support Black artists at NC State and shed light on the underrepresentation of people of color in the arts.
The Project
In 2020, Black Lives Matter brought a lot of attention to the responsibility of institutions to do better to strive for equity. As a platform with our own voice, the Windhover team looked internally to see how we can address the issue of underrepresentation of Black creators in the arts in our community at NC State. When I joined the team, the question was presented of how and in what way were we going to contribute to the solution. After meeting with key members of the community, we decided to create the Perspectives Edition: a special edition of the Windhover Magazine designed to highlight the works of Black creators at NC State.
My Role

As Project Lead for this special edition, I was involved in making the edition come to life, which overseeing and having a hand a variety of parts of its creation. I worked closely with the editor in chief to contact the key community members and meet with them to discuss the project. Those members eventually joined our Oversight Committee, which I regularly contacted with updates and important news regarding the edition's progress. Additionally, I was a visual committee member for the magazine and therefore assessed visual submissions by Black students, alumni, and faculty members to curate which pieces made it into the final published Perspectives edition.

As An Artist
I related to the ideals of the projects heavily because it is a topic that I focus on frequently in my own artwork. This photo (right) that I took to showcase the struggles of finding food and water was selected to be in the Perspectives Edition*.
*As per Windhover's Submission Policy, I did not have any input in regards to the judging my work. I was not included in the reviewing process or any process thereafter for my own submission.
